Sons and Mothers

“History is a balm capable of healing America’s deep-seated racial wounds. To do so we must tell a fuller story about our national past to our present selves.” Peniel E. Joseph, The Third Reconstruction

My mother tells me that she had a very long talk with herself and has decided that her days of worrying about her elevated blood pressure are over. God will know what to do with me, she says. It’s in his hands. I’m not going to take my blood pressure every day, it just makes me more anxious. I’m telling all my doctors to stop pestering me about it. It’s all they want to talk about. But they don’t listen because they’re always typing on the computer! I had a better conversation on the phone with Dr. Pham than I did in person. She hardly even looked at me, and of course she was wearing a mask. She kind of spit this last sentence out, like a person who spent the pandemic watching FOX News, as if it’s somehow offensive that a doctor, working in a hospital setting in the Covid age, would still wear a mask.

I’m not particularly close to my mother. Except for a few months in my mid-20’s, when I lived with her in a high rise condominium near the Ala Wai canal in Honolulu, I’ve only seen my mother in the flesh a handful of times since the early 1980’s. My wedding, the birth of my son, her first grandchild, for these events she flew from Honolulu, and she may have come five years later when my daughter was born, though I can’t remember for certain. Perhaps there are photographs in one of my wife’s many photo boxes. In those days it was a little uncomfortable with my mother, tense at times; she isn’t an easygoing soul, in fact she’s pretty uptight, stuck in the era in which she came of age, the 1940s and 1950s, and not easy to be around. She can be a little holier-than-thou when it comes to diet and exercise. She thinks there has never been anything on television better than “Dancing with the Stars.” Our relationship was never particularly close, and for long periods of time it was as emotionally distant as the miles between Santa Barbara and Honolulu, limited to birthday and Christmas cards, occasional calls, sometimes a short letter. But she’s 88 years old now, with some hearing loss in one ear, a weak back, and chronically high blood pressure. Around two years ago she had back surgery, but made an amazingly quick recovery with the help of physical therapy. She resumed her routine independent life and was fine for more than a year. Then in late March she aggravated her back walking up two flights of stairs. After a couple of days of painful spasms she took herself to the ER at Kaiser and was later admitted. Her blood pressure was high, her sodium level low, and her lower back screaming.

Since her back surgery, I’ve had a lot more contact with my mother, talking with her several times a week. I have her power of attorney for financial and medical matters, instructions for her cremation, etc. When she was at Kaiser this time I spoke with one or more of her doctors every day. Within three or four days her pain was being managed with medications and her sodium level had improved, but her blood pressure was still high and she was anxious because her bowel movements were inconsistent. When she was moved to a skilled nursing facility for rehabilitation, she complained about the food claiming it was contributing to her constipation. There’s no fresh fruit, she told me. I have fresh fruit every morning!

It has been a long time since I talked about politics with my mother. Several years ago it became evident that she was a consistent viewer of FOX News as well as a consistent listener of right-wing talk radio, and that made talking about politics practically impossible. I assume she voted for Donald Trump in 2016 and 2020. Every now and then she lets a comment slip that I can tell comes from right-wing media. For example, while she was in the skilled nursing facility we were talking about her finances and she made a disparaging remark about Joe Biden and inflation. At one time I might have challenged her, but to do so now is pointless. I’m somewhat baffled by her conservatism, but if one consumes a steady diet of propaganda like that offered on FOX News, it’s a predictable outcome.

My mother has enjoyed good health for most of her life, partly because of genetics (several women in her family, including my grandmother, lived well into their 90’s) and because she has taken obsessively good care of herself. She takes vitamins and supplements like garlic and probiotics, but hates taking medications of any kind. She’s of slight and slender build, fastidious about her appearance, eats mostly fruit, vegetables, and fish, walks everywhere, and for many years danced at the Elks Club and Eagles Lodge and on all the hotel dance floors in Waikiki that played “traditional Hawaiian music,” as my mother calls it, always with vocal emphasis on “traditional.” My mother loves kitsch. She was a fan of several local musicians, and followed them as they changed venues. She may have done a competition or two. But to her way of thinking, she was as good as a professional, and dancing was her Fountain of Youth, the thing that kept her body fit, but, strangely, had no effect on making her mind and way of being more flexible. She still sends me checks in the mail, and refuses to use online banking. She has a very simple Jitterbug smartphone that drives her crazy. She needs help with her iPad. She doesn’t do Venmo, Uber, Lyft or even Google. She’s a medium-level Luddite. Other than dancing, I don’t think she ever took an adult ed class or set out to learn a new skill. She’s never been into gardening, and if there are houseplants in her Honolulu studio, they’re probably fake. She most definitely considers herself a Christian, though I don’t think she identifies as a Catholic despite being raised in a French-Canadian Catholic milieu in Salem, MA, and attending parochial school from kindergarten through high school.

My mother’s not matronly, nor is she outwardly maternal. Not cuddly. Not a hugger.

She believes in positive thinking and prayer.

I can detect parts of my mother in myself. I have some of her vanity and stubbornness, of which I can’t say I’m proud. I guess we cannot expect to turn out completely different from our parents. Finding traces of my father is a little more difficult because I spent very little time with him; he passed away at 57. Never saw his grandchildren.

My mother is the kind of person who seems to lack substance, and it doesn’t take much time to exhaust topics of conversation with her. But one thing I admire about her is her willingness to take risks; she convinced my father to move to California in the mid-50’s, just pack up and go, find a town and settle down. In the late 70’s she moved to northern California, Los Gatos, then a few years later to Hawaii. Honolulu. Waikiki. After more than 40 years in residence, she retains the mindset of a tourist.

For The People

“The purity and strength of Americanism are always threatened by contamination from outside and betrayal from within. The narrative of Real America is white Christian nationalism.” George Packer, The Atlantic, “The Four Americas.”

We won’t miss our democracy until it’s gone, and it appears to me that we’re well on the way to that eventuality. When it happens, and the reality of what’s been lost sets in, it will seem as if it happened suddenly rather than gradually. To me it feels like we are watching a theft in progress, a steady drip, drip, drip of statements, legislation, polls, stunts (the Arizona recount, for instance) appointments to key posts in the state bureaucracies that operate our elections, and Trump’s stranglehold on the GOP. Blocking a bipartisan investigation of the January 6 insurrection attempt and the events that led up to it is one way to fashion truth from lies. Don’t dig. Don’t corroborate. Blame Antifa thugs masquerading as MAGA members for all the damage and death; those agitators from the godless coasts who rode into DC on the wings of giant black bats with twelve foot wingspans and fire shooting from their talons. In Q-World, nothing is too outlandish.

Trump lost, but his Big Lie lives. The bloated con man from Florida may very well succeed in creating history completely from a stew of lies and crackpot theories concocted in mildewy basements then propagated across the Internet and echoed by the FOX News/Sinclair Broadcasting/OAN universe. People who are either gullible or otherwise starved of factual information make easier marks. Ignorance is a tough, persistent opponent that doesn’t go down easily.

Joe Manchin of West Virginia has leverage over his fellow Democrats. He can sputter incoherently about his love of democracy and bipartisanship while blocking his party’s efforts to defang the filibuster and expand and protect voting rights. If Democrats push him too hard Joe might slide across the aisle and join the GOP, giving Mitch McConnell his majority again. Joe’s not up for reelection until 2024 and has little to fear from West Virginia voters even if he were to switch parties. It’s not like West Virginia is a safe haven for Democrats. Trump carried the state by a whopping margin. Manchin can enjoy this turn as a Big Time DC Power Broker with virtual impunity.

For The People. Sounds nice. Sounds aspirational, even inspiring, just follow the wisdom of the common American, who can be counted on to be magnanimous, decent, fair, and just. Sure. If only it worked that way. The last thing the Gilded Class and its political babysitters want is more democracy; the fewer people that vote the better for them. Maintaining minority rule requires a lot of hubris and a fair amount of engineering. Control over who can cast a ballot is good; control over how votes are tabulated and certified is better.

The Isolation Diaries No. 23

“I think of the entire history of human strife and how we navigate the frightening and the unknown.” Anna Badkhen, New York Review of Books

Hot. 90 degrees at 6:00 p.m. in Santa Barbara. Our apartment is stifling, even with the front and back doors open and a ceiling fan and three tower fans running at top speed. The breeze brings warm air. After sundown the wind lashes at the windows, yanks the doors closed with a bang. The wind recedes, then rushes again with renewed ferocity; the wind chimes on the deck dance madly. Another day of self-isolation comes to a close. We survive, none are ill under our roof or the roofs of our immediate family. Our niece, Mia, a nursing student, is hunkered down in NYC.

I work off and on, read The Plague and The Plot Against America, take a short nap, have a training session in the glaring afternoon sun, sit on my meditation cushion. For my 61st birthday I received a pair of Apple Airpods, an extravagant gift from my wife and mother-in-law. I drink several cups of peppermint tea.

And then back to the pandemic, the open air asylum that is Trump and McConnell’s America, unmasked now with all its weakness and cruelty on full display. The hypocrisy of the GOP is stunning. Of course the people are subjected to another session of Trump’s verbal diarrhea. Trump seems to have backed off his favorite Covid-19 miracle drug, hydroxycholoquine, now that more evidence against its efficacy is presented. Trump is now on to sunlight and lung-cleansing disinfectants. I wonder if the good folks over at FOX News, like Sean Hannity, Laura Ingraham, Tucker Carlson, Dr. Oz, and Brian Kilmeade will echo Trump about the latest nonsense as they did hundreds of times about hydroxychloroquine. Will someone sue these people or FOX News? One can only hope. At a time of great crisis and danger, America is bereft of great men (we have some great women, but none of them are in power). Instead our fate rests in the hands of greedheads, imbeciles, charlatans, jesters, cranks, crackpots, cretins, xenophobes, homophobes, Christian warriors, fools, fakers and misanthropes.

I came across this passage in The Plot Against America: “I went because every day I ask myself the same question: How can this be happening in America? How can people like these be in charge of our country?”

That about sums it up.

Neoliberalism is on its deathbed, stripped of its gloss and false promises of trickle down prosperity; we should hasten its demise, pull the plug, but the white men in power stay our hand and will, they want to keep the patient alive while they continue, by means fair or foul, to rig the end game so they win and the masses lose. I came across this in the New York Review of Books by Hari Kunzru:

“The rapid disintegration of all social and economic life has exposed the terrible fragility of the American system. How does a society that privatizes risk cope with a public health crisis? How can it ask for social solidarity when it demonizes every expression of it as ‘socialism’? Suddenly we are all socialists, even Mitt Romney, trying to reinvent community as we self-isolate in our apartments.”

I keep fear and despondency at bay by keeping my focus in the moment. It’s a difficult task. Others must feel the same because I see more traffic on the streets, more people outside. My sense is of a boundary being pushed and prodded to see how much it can bend. The number of confirmed Covid-19 cases in this county approaches 500.

The Nadir of the American Republic

“But that boundless blind faith is beginning to fade now.” Hunter S. Thompson

My head aches. I listen to bits of the House impeachment proceedings, then read about them on my usual outlets -- Truthout, Truthdig, The Nation, Counterpunch, Politico, Democracy NOW -- and try to make sense of it all. What’s abundantly clear is that the Republicans have sold their souls and their children and their pets to Trump, and can no longer even be described as a political party. Noam Chomsky has said numerous times that the current GOP is a criminal organization. When it comes to the Orange Menace, they see no evil, hear no evil and speak nothing but nonsense. Naturally, the blowhards and miscreants over at FOX News spin and slant their coverage to make it appear that the Democrats are throwing punches but not coming close to landing a glove on the innocent Trump.

It amuses me to hear Marie Yovanovitch, the former ambassador to Ukraine, talk about how the State Department attempted to school the newly established Ukranian government in anti-corruption practices. Coming from the United States -- whose Representatives and Senators are, with few exceptions, purchased, owned and operated by corporate interests, and whose foreign policy history is rife with coups, election interference, regime change operations, spying, invasions, assassination attempts and other malfeseance -- this is laughable, like a convicted pedophile priest teaching sex ed to teenage boys.

When I think of American corruption, I think of the silky smooth rhetoric of Barack Obama, who couched the power plays of the American empire in words like self-determination, democracy, liberty and justice, and then turned around and authorized targeted assassinations in Afghanistan or wherever else he felt US power needed to be demonstrated. Measured, reasonable language and a Sidewinder missile is how America has always preferred to operate its Empire. The Trump Administration is completely different, of course, crude, clumsy and overt, the shiny facade ripped away to reveal the base intent of Empire (or is the objective now only to enrich Trump and his family?), which is, lest we forget, to thwart global rivals, control natural resources and markets, put down popular uprisings, and justify ever-increasing contributions to the Pentagon war machine.

The divide in this country, between reality-based citizens and those who dwell in the FOX News ecosystem, is now so deep and broad that I fear America is finished as a representative democracy. We’ve reached such a nadir the two political parties cannot even agree on the most basic facts. If Adam Schiff asserted that Abraham Lincoln was 6’4” tall in his stockings, Republicans would immediately accuse Schiff of inflating Lincoln’s height, Tucker Carlson would call him the biggest liar in American history, and Sean Hannity would devote an entire show to “Height-Gate.” No republic can survive in this atmosphere, not when the economy is primed to implode and the impact of anthropogenic climate change is accelerating by the day.

Here’s a dim and not very original prediction. The House will impeach Trump on a party-line vote and the Senate will acquit him, also on a party-line vote. If the economy doesn’t implode between now and election day, Trump will lose the popular vote, again, but prevail in the undemocratic Electoral College, again. Four more years of Trump will spell the end of America as we’ve known it. If you can think about that without feeling a sharp pain in your lower intestine, you must be very wealthy, stone dumb, or high on the most potent chemical concoction Big Pharma can come up with.

A Step Closer to the Gallows

What we know for sure is that the path to the criminal prosecution and imprisonment of the president of the United States is now clear. How it is handled will be a major test for the American system of government.” James Risen

Trump pals Manafort and Cohen are convicted and Fox News ignores the evolving story, sticks its collective head in a pile of Trump’s beautiful clean coal. Not surprising. Fox is the real fake news, a phony network that acts as the official propaganda organ of the right-wing and Donald J. Trump. But in the real world of facts, the noose is clearly tightening around Trump’s fat white neck. His former campaign manager and his lawyer/confidant/fixer face jail time, and that bleak future usually renders people quite cooperative. Sing, men, sing.

Day by day the sleaze oozes out of the White House, drips down the front steps, and streams toward the gutter. Trump’s criminal gang falls like dominoes. Who will be next? I’m old enough to remember Watergate, Nixon, the cover up, All the President’s Men, John Dean, Erlichman and Halderman, the web of lies, how the unraveling gathered speed and ended with Nixon waving like a spastic from the helicopter that carried him away. What’s happening with Trump is much worse. Not only is Trump an ignorant douchebag, he’s an odious human being, a liar and a grifter. If hell exists, Trump is headed there, express ticket, non-stop. He has debased his office, insulted the world, and divided this country.

Though Trump is marching them to the edge of the precipice, the lapdogs and sycophants of the GOP, having forgotten their oath of office and obligations under the Constitution, stand by their man. Trump says bend over, they do; Trump says spread your cheeks, they do. The Party of Lincoln. Sorry, Abraham, poor sod. When will Republican members of congress find their spines and turn on Trump? How much more water does the ship need to take on before the rats sprint for the exits?

Of course, the Trump spin machine is now on overdrive, denying and deflecting and dissembling and defending, insisting that there is no crime, no collusion, no campaign finance violation, even though Cohen copped to two counts of federal election violations. “Nothing to do with campaign finance,” Trump says. “I don’t know Cohen that well. Hardly know him, rarely talked to him. Might not be able to pick him out of a police lineup.” The detestable Huckabee Sanders ridicules media questions, regurgitates Trump’s ludicrous denials, and the machine spins on, black is white, 1+1=4, coal burns clean, and the economy of West Virginia is the envy of America. Here’s what the Orange Menace said to Fox News:

“I don't know how you can impeach somebody who has done a great job,” Mr Trump told Fox News. “I will tell you what, if I ever got impeached, I think the market would crash. I think everybody would be very poor because, without this thinking, you would see – you would see numbers that you wouldn't believe, in reverse.”

Great job? The market would crash? I’ve said it before, but I have to say it again, the President of the United States of America is a fucking imbecile. There’s no point in even deconstructing his comments.

What happened to us, to America, a country that has been occasionally good but never, ever great? How in the world have we fallen so far so fast? Or does it only feel fast? Capital has been on the ascendancy for 40 years, buying politicians to write laws in their favor, chipping away at the welfare state and New Deal institutions, labor unions, environmental regulations, shifting manufacturing to low-wage nations, freeing capital from restraint, packing the federal courts with corporate-friendly judges; little by little amassing more power, more control in fewer hands, always a recipe for tyranny. Facebook, Amazon, Google, Boeing, Goldman Sachs. A corporate coup, as Chris Hedges might say.

And so it goes in Trump’s capitalist wasteland.
