Out and Out Dread

Never let the weeds get higher than the garden.” Tom Waits

Kids are back in school, at distance, through digital pipes that bring their teachers to them on screens. Covid-19 is still here, people are still wearing masks, nine blocks of State Street are still off limits to vehicle traffic. The outdoor eating areas take on a more permanent aspect. After six months it still feels somewhat surreal, and it’s definitely spiritually and emotionally draining.

By itself the pandemic is enough of a disturbance and worry, but America is on a slippery slope and I find it impossible to ignore the incessant political noise. It’s more than fear and loathing, it’s dread, out and out dread. Our racist president cannot bring himself to speak the name Jacob Blake, shot in the back seven times by trigger-happy police, or acknowledge the murder of two people at the hands of a teenage vigilante. Trump can’t do that, but he can ramble on about property damage and the threat Black Lives Matter protesters pose to delicate white women; he can spout nonsense about “dark shadows” from the Left who control Joe Biden. Trump, a coward pretending to be tough, has nothing but praise for law enforcement. Trump’s racism is as blatant as his ignorance and corruption. Racism is what propelled his political run in the first place, it’s the only card left in his tiny hand, and he will play it because racism has always been a reliable political tool in America.

Out and out dread. Inescapable. No savior, no miracle, no intervention from a benevolent god.

Judging by the amount of construction going on, Santa Barbara’s building business is still healthy. While there are many empty storefronts on State Street, the renovation of the Paseo Nuevo Mall, no longer anchored by Macy’s and Nordstrom, is nearing completion. That looks more and more like a losing bet. Why pour money into a mall when malls are becoming obsolete, relics of another era? Near the building where I work, the corner of Santa Barbara and De la Guerra Streets, two new buildings are rising from their foundations dug twenty feet into the ground. Every inch of both lots used. Three stories, underground parking, white stucco and red tile. Piece of paradise for those that can afford the asking price.

I can’t.

For me SB is a town full of ghosts, vague memories, shadows. My wife can remember very specific details from high school, I can recall very few. That time was a blur. It felt endless while it was happening, but soon was far in the rearview mirror. I left SB in 1977 and didn’t return for good until 1988. A lot happened to me during that time, and a lot was starting to happen in SB. By the time I returned, my hometown had a different vibe, and that’s one thing that hasn’t changed. American Riviera, baby! Wine country. Home of Hollywood stars, Oprah, Jeff Bridges, etc. SB had long been a sleepy tourist town, but it became a destination. Come LA. Come Europe. Come Japan. Come China. Come one, come all, let’s have a fiesta! And come they did, and come they do, even in a pandemic.

Now the narrow brick building that houses The Pressroom, an iconic watering hole beloved by soccer fans, is in jeopardy, its fate in the hands of developers and the planning commission. You see, SB needs more elegant-downtown-white stucco- tiled entryway-wrought iron balcony-red tile housing for the deserving wealthy, and that is what is proposed for the block. Might spell the end for yet another local institution. The Pressroom might survive a move, but there’s something about that particular block, the shape and contour of the building itself, the interior, where the barstools and tables are, the spot outside where smokers gather. It’s a one-off, dependent on the space for its particular atmosphere. Would Harry’s Plaza Cafe be Harry’s anyplace but Loretto Plaza? You can’t manufacture character, character is built over time, by surviving through the years, changing and adapting as needed, but never at the expense of essence.

Money. The way the economy is structured, money never stops looking for growth opportunities. Finance people and developers know a desirable city like SB is a good bet, a magnet for money. If you build it, someone will buy it, rent it, lease it. The developers may have local ties, deep ones in some cases, but money has a powerful pull and a logic of its own. After much hand-wringing by local officials, money usually wins.

Lost at sea, seven miles south of Purgatory; the sails are torn and our flag is in tatters. Looking into the gloom an old sailor says what most of the crew is thinking: “We may not see land again.”

Pity The Queen

“A rat always knows when he's in with weasels." Tom Waits

-It’s almost time, your majesty.

-Do I have to? He’s such an odious fool. I’d rather don a pair of rubber boots and shovel horse poo in the royal stable.

-I know, ma’am, but it is a state visit, after all, and America remains an important ally.

-Are you sure? The man is an idiot, a complete idiot. Advising Britain to stiff the EU and then sue them. Who behaves this way?

-Afraid he does, ma’am, he’s notorious for it. His reputation as a con man is very well deserved. Stiff and sue, that’s his business model.

-Last time he was here he almost tripped me while we were reviewing the honor guard. It was awful, simply awful. Help me with this clasp, please. I tell you, this is the worst part of being Queen. Thank God he’s not staying in the palace. Can you imagine him and his horrid family running about! Hand me that mirror. The staff would definitely have to conduct an inventory after they left.

-I know, your majesty. It will go quickly and then he will return to his domestic problems. Think of it as tearing a band-aid from a wound. I’m sure you can safely ignore 95% of what comes out of his mouth. He is fearfully ignorant.

-Democracy is so, oh, so untidy.

-That it is, ma’am, that it is. Elections can be unpredictable. More often than not, the best candidate loses.

-He’s such a pathetic egomaniac that he probably thinks the D-Day remembrance is about him. D-for-Donald. My goodness, such an imbecile. Even royalty must suffer fools. I suppose it has always been so. Fools and charlatans, generals with noodles for brains, clergymen with all their brains below the waist, addled prime ministers. Oh, I will feel much better once the toast is over, that’s what I most dread. Hopefully I won’t gag -- or suffer a stroke.

-You won’t ma’am. You represent our nation brilliantly. He wishes he were as popular and as well loved. Obviously it’s what he craves more than anything, but he will never have it.

-How’s my hair? I can’t understand what his wife sees in him. He makes my skin crawl. It’s like being around a rabid dog. Never could I have imagined toasting a reality TV personality who buys the silence of pornographic actresses. Has the world been flipped on its ear? Have we all gone mad? The Queen of England is playing host to a completely immoral, utterly witless, real estate huckster!

-It is baffling, your majesty. The clowns shouldn’t run the circus, should they?

-No, indeed.

-Ready, your majesty?

-Not really, but my duty is clear and I shall discharge it with grace and competence, as have the monarchs before me. If nothing else, there is the consolation of not having to ride with that obnoxious man in my royal carriage!

Goodbye, Lady Liberty

“For the monster on the move, or on the watch, lurking in his lair, there is no mercy.” Samuel Beckett

The Statue of Liberty, a gift from France to the people of the United States, has now outlived its usefulness as a symbol of our country. Since we are no longer about welcoming the world’s huddled and tired masses yearning to be free, and our liberties have suffered sharp curtailment in the age of mass surveillance, Lady Liberty should be dynamited and replaced with a massive tower at the top of which will sit a colossal bust of Donald J. Trump’s head, in full Trumpian snarl. An inscription below shall read: Turn back, murderers and rapists, unless you be white and Christian.

The literal rape of our country by Trump and his associates continues, gathers speed, like an enormous ball-bearing rolling down Lombard Street in San Francisco, unstoppable, whether by tradition, norms, the legislative branch, the Constitution, or an instinct for self-preservation. We are rat-fucked.

It’s likely that very soon John Bolton will achieve his long cherished wet dream of attacking Iran. That the US can apply economic sanctions against Iran, and financially punish sovereign nations that want to continue their business relations with Iran, and at the same time threaten Iran with militarily force, is the height of imperialism. The US is, hands down, the world’s paramount thug. It lashes out with all its might at any country that refuses to bow to it, like Venezuela, Cuba, or Iran.

The notion that Iran would invite an American military response by attacking American allies or “interests” is ridiculous. Iran is suffering from crippling economic sanctions, a form of collective punishment. I have no doubt that Iran will fight back if attacked, but I do not believe Iran seeks a military conflict with the US. Only the leaders of the US think the Iranians are stupid.

Oh, Dr. King, so long ago you warned against the dangers of militarism, how militarism abroad sooner or later manifested at home. Well, here we stand, a country that has become cruel, uncaring, mean-spirited, exclusionary, crass, and corrupt, one that sees brute force as the solution to every problem. We lead the world in incarceration. Police routinely murder unarmed citizens of color and rarely pay a price. Our economy punishes working-class and poor people and then on top of that we criminalize them. White-collar criminals run the house. We accept homelessness as normal rather than an aberration. We don’t care if people die because they cannot afford medical care or prescription medications. We gleefully saddle young people with staggering student loan debt.

Every day that our political leaders -- and the corporate and wealthy interests that own them -- ignore climate change in favor of business as usual, we tempt fate.

Fate will win, humanity will lose.

The will of the governed no longer matters, if it ever did. We have normalized a tyranny of the minority, led by human toads like Mitch McConnell, who will without doubt burn in the furnaces of hell. Do you have any doubt that Roe v. Wade is on death row, soon to be executed by our radical Supreme Court?

Tyrannical monarchs and dictators of the past were toppled when the people had had enough, when too many starved to death or were fed like fodder to foreign wars or were imprisoned on false charges or had their land confiscated. Things are different now. Humanity faces two grave threats, catastrophic climate change and nuclear annihilation.

Time isn’t on our side. As Tom Waits once sang, “the Earth died screaming.”
